Smith to Run in New York City Marathon (October 29, 2014)

On Sunday, November 2, 2014, Steve Smith will run in the New York City Marathon.  Smith will be part of a 24-person relay team of basketball celebrities, who are trying to encourage kids to exercise.  NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will run the first three miles and hand off to Chris Mullin, a Brooklyn native, former NBA (and Hall of Fame) player.  Smith, Silver and Mullin will be joined by Hall of Famer Tiny Archibald, Knicks greats Charles Oakley, Bernard King and Allan Houston, and the Net’s Darryl Dawkins and Jason Collins.  The 24-person relay team also has WNBA stars Swin Cash, Teresa Edwards, Ruth Riley and Katie Smith, in addition to NBA TV analyst Greg Anthony and executives from the league, the Knicks and the Nets, and broadcaster Mike Breen.  Dikembe Mutombo will cross the finish line for the relay team.  Each celebrity will be paired with a local student for their one-mile leg of the relay.  A more detailed report of this event can be found at http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id/11774703/adam-silver-nba-commissioner-ex-stars-run-new-york-city-marathon-relay.

17th Annual Academic Excellence Gala – Steve Smith Philanthropy Award (April 14, 2014)
The MSU Athletics and Spartan Fund presented the Steve Smith Philanthropy Award to Craig and Vicki Brown on April 14, 2014.  Mr. and Mrs. Brown received the Award for their generosity to Michigan State University Intercollegiate Athletics.  Their gift of $2 Million for the North End Zone Expansion is the most recent in a long history of contributions to the department.  The Award is given annually to the individual(s) who embodies the philanthropic support for MSU athletics, proven leadership to inspire others, continuous community service efforts and who demonstrate the same values as Steve Smith.

Second Annual Spartan Sports Journalism Classic (April 10, 2014)
Steve Smith and Steve Lacy hosted the Second Annual Spartan Sports Journalism Classic that was held on April 10, 2014 at Michigan State University.  This year’s All-Star Panel  included Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports; Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Mornings News; Jo-Ann Barnas, former Detroit Free Press sportswriter; and Craig Custance of ESPN.  Steve and the Panel discussed their experiences covering the Olympic Games.

Steve Smith to Host Spartan Sports Journalism Classic (April 5th, 2013)
Some of the biggest names in sports journalism convened at Michigan State University’s College of Communication Arts & Sciences (CAS) building on April 11 when NBA All Star and Michigan State University Athletics Hall of Famer Steve Smith and CAS Dean Pamela Whitten hosted the first Spartan Sports Journalism Classic.

“I’m looking forward to connecting with the next generation of sports journalists. MSU has played a big part in my life. I’m honored to join my colleagues and fellow Spartans to support one of the best sports journalism programs anywhere,” said Smith.

Spartans Steve Smith and Mateen Cleaves Inducted into Michigan Sports Hall of Fame (February 19, 2013)
Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo wasn’t going missing the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony Monday night, even though it meant a long drive and some schedule rearranging….

“Steve Smith was my first recruit as an assistant at Michigan State, and then when we won the Big Ten championship, that’s when the noise started about me getting the job,” Izzo said. “So I felt like he got me the job, and then Mateen Cleaves won me a national championship. (Cleaves) got it so I kept the job. So I can’t think of two guys who have been more involved with our program and more involved with me.”

The Detroit Free Press excerpted a recent interview Steve did on “The Dan Patrick Show” where he was questioned about using “us” when referring to Michigan State University. As Steve put it, “it’s still us when you start talking about Michigan State University.”

Steve Smith Honored with Jack Breslin Lifetime Achievement Award East Lansing, Mich. (September 12, 2009)
Former Michigan State University Spartan and NBA star Steve Smith won lots of kudos on the basketball court, but Saturday he was honored for his charitable work off the court.

Smith was presented with the Jack Breslin Lifetime Achievement Award during halftime at the Michigan State-Central Michigan University football game. The award is given each year to a former MSU varsity athlete whose post-college career has brought great honor to him and, by reflection, to MSU and its intercollegiate athletic programs.
