Spartans Steve Smith and Mateen Cleaves Inducted into Michigan Sports Hall of Fame

Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo wasn’t going to miss the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony Monday night, even though it meant a long drive and some schedule rearranging….

“Steve Smith was my first recruit as an assistant at Michigan State, and then when we won the Big Ten championship, that’s when the noise started about me getting the job,” Izzo said. “So I felt like he got me the job, and then Mateen Cleaves won me a national championship. (Cleaves) got it so I kept the job. So I can’t think of two guys who have been more involved with our program and more involved with me.”
