Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo wasn’t going to miss the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony Monday night, even though it meant a long drive and some schedule rearranging…. “Steve Smith was my first recruit as an assistant at Michigan State, and then when we won the Big Ten championship, that’s when the noise started about me getting the job,” Izzo said. “So I felt like he got me the job, and then Mateen Cleaves won me a national championship. Former Michigan State University Spartan and NBA star Steve Smith won lots of kudos on the basketball court, but Saturday he was honored for his charitable work off the court. Smith was presented with the Jack Breslin Lifetime Achievement Award during halftime at the Michigan State-Central Michigan University football game. The award is given each year to a former MSU varsity athlete whose post-college career has brought great honor to him and, by reflection, to MSU and its intercollegiate athletic programs.
